Protections Under Sarbanes-Oxley Federal Law
Recently, the Supreme Court decided a case, Lawson v. FMR (134 S.Ct. 1158 US 2014) where under the federal law of Sarbanes-Oxley, employees of private companies that contract with publicly traded companies are covered by whistleblower protection if they choose to come forward and report wrongdoing.
This means that even if you do not work directly for a publicly traded company, but are employed as a contractor or in another capacity and observe wrongdoing, you can be protected as a whistleblower if you expose this misconduct. This is an important expansion of the protections that were previously allowed under Sarbanes-Oxley.
