When to turn to a business lawyer for help

Small business owners typically don’t have a lot of extra capital lying around, especially right after starting a business, so they often try to do as much as they can themselves.

In many cases, small business owners try to avoid consulting a business attorney until they think they have no other choice, but as a FindLaw.com article points out, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure.”

The key is to understand which business matters you should handle yourself and which matters you should look to a business lawyer for help with.

The FindLaw.com article has a full list of issues that small business owners should be able to handle themselves, ranging from writing a business plan to finding a domain name for their website to applying for licenses and permits.

There is also a long list of legal matters that small business owners typically aren’t qualified to handle on their own, including lawsuits filed by current or former employees, investigations or complaints by regulatory agencies, environmental issues, and selling or buying a business.

Ultimately, it is best to find a business attorney you can trust to let you know when you can handle something on your own or professional legal expertise is required.

Today’s business environment is complex, and in order to be successful, a business owner must work with an attorney who is knowledgeable about business law and employment law, but also has practical business experience.

Our firm is focused on building long-term business relationships with our clients. We do everything we can to help our clients achieve long-term success by stepping in to assist with high-stakes issues such as employment concerns, contract disputes and complicated real estate transactions.
