Cyberbullying is a real problem for some Texas businesses

Colorado employers should strive to ensure that their employees have a safe work environment that is free from harassment and discrimination. However, this can be more difficult to do now that many employees are working from home. Unfortunately, cyberbullying and harassment is becoming a more prominent concern as many businesses have shifted to allow employees to work remotely.

Harassment can still happen digitally, however. Outright threats and more inconspicuous types of bullying can cause emotional harm, even if it takes place over the internet. If you believe you are experiencing this type of treatment, you do not have to suffer in silence. Even if it does not happen face-to-face, it could be grounds to move forward with a civil claim against your employer.

The role of employers

There are certain things employers can do to promote safe and peaceful work environments, even when their workforce is at home. Digital workplaces can operate under the same expectations as regular offices, and employers should start by making sure all employees understand that. The following are also important ways to combat cyberbullying:

  • Reporting procedures: Employees should feel as if they are able to privately report instances of harassment without fearing retaliation or discrimination. Employers should take reports seriously and work to resolve concerns as soon as possible.
  • Good policies: All employees should know and understand the policies. This allows employers to hold individuals accountable if they harass or bully someone, even online.
  • Take it seriously: Harassment, bullying and discrimination are serious, and an employer should approach the subject appropriately. They should be committed to making their workplaces good and safe for everyone, even over Zoom, in a Skype chat or in an email.

Cyberbullying can take many forms, and you may not be sure that what you experienced counts as harassment. If you suspect that you are a victim, an assessment of your case can help you understand the specific legal options that could be available to you.

Don't face it alone

As a victim of cyberbullying, you have rights. Speaking with an experienced employment law attorney can help you understand how to move forward with the appropriate course of action. Through a civil claim, it is possible to hold liable parties accountable for the mistreatment you experienced while working from home. This is not something you have to face alone.
