What type of discrimination are you facing at work?

When you go to work, you should be able to do your job without experiencing unfair or discriminatory treatment of any kind. Unfortunately, that is not the reality for many in Colorado. You may be an employee who had to deal with various types of discrimination at your place of work. You may feel angry, overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next.

Workplace discrimination can come in many different forms, from the hiring process to decisions on whom to terminate when downsizing. You may also experience discrimination in conversations, through the denial of benefits, from receiving negative comments and in other more subtle ways. No matter the type of discriminatory treatment you experience, you have the right to report it and take steps to hold liable parties accountable.

Ways people discriminate at work

There are state and federal laws that prohibit discrimination in the workplace. Some of the most common types of discriminatory treatment that takes place in professional settings include the following:

  • Age discrimination
  • Gender and sex discrimination
  • Disability discrimination
  • Religious discrimination
  • LGBTQ discrimination
  • Pregnancy discrimination
  • Race discrimination

There is no place for discrimination at any stage of the employment process. For example, an employer cannot refuse to hire a qualified candidate because of the color of his or her skin. A company cannot force older employees to retire or take away benefits after they reach a certain age.

What should you do?

If you believe you are the victim of discrimination, it may be helpful to document what you are experiencing. Write down things as they happen and note who initiated the discriminatory behavior. This can be incredibly important if you decide to move forward with a civil claim. It is also important to report any discrimination through the proper channels and to keep documentation of your efforts to bring the problem to your employer's attention.

Your rights

You do not have to suffer from discrimination in silence. As a victim, you will find it helpful to work with an experienced employment law attorney who can assist you at every step. Starting with an assessment of your case, a lawyer can help you understand the protections provided to you by the law and how you can proceed with the civil justice process. With knowledgeable guidance, it is possible to hold appropriate parties accountable for what you experienced.
