Counselor at Law, P.C.
Business & Employment Law Attorney

How can you protect your company’s private data?

Technology has made running a business more convenient, but it has also opened companies up to various threats. As an employer, you must protect private data.

According to the FCC, cybersecurity can protect your data.

Limit Access

Your business needs a strong Wi-Fi network. The company’s network should be encrypted, secure and hidden. Do not broadcast the network’s name and ensure you have a strong password for the router. You can still offer Wi-Fi to guests, but make sure it is a different router and network than where you store important files.

In addition, it limits which employees can access which data systems. Employees only need to access the data required to perform their job. Do not allow anyone to install software without permission.

Conduct Employee Training

Everyone who works for your company should know how to protect their accounts and how to protect the company. Require workers to have strong passwords and ask them to change the passwords regularly. In addition, teach safe habits online. Phishing scams often involve scammers e-mailing employees a link from an official-looking email address. The link instructs employees to log in and when the employee does so, the scammer can access the account.

Install Security Software

Use technology to keep your machines and network clean. If you do not have the latest security software, you cannot account for every type of malware, virus or other threats online. Your antivirus software should update regularly and you may want to work with a professional to ensure that you have the most up-to-date technology. Likewise, keep your browsers and operating systems up to date too. Modern operating systems tend to have the latest security updates.

For added safety, implement multi-factor authentication to gain entry to essential data.
